Visit Loch Ard Gorge

Welcome to Loch Ard Gorge, a place where nature's beauty intertwines with an awe-inspiring tale of survival and resilience. We will share with you the captivating story of the shipwreck of Loch Ard, a story that will leave you inspired and in awe of the human spirit.

Picture this: It was the year 1878 when Loch Ard, a magnificent 3 mast clipper, set sail from Gravesend, Kent, bound for Melbourne, Australia. On board were 54 souls, including the courageous Captain George Gibbs, his crew, and 17 passengers seeking new beginnings in a distant land.

After a long and arduous journey across the vast ocean, the ship was nearing its destination on that fateful day of June 1st. The crew eagerly anticipated sighting the land, but a thick blanket of fog descended upon them, shrouding their surroundings in an impenetrable mist.

As fate would have it, the Cape Otway lighthouse, which could have guided them safely, remained hidden from their view. Compounded by faulty chronometers and unfavourable weather conditions in the preceding days, Captain Gibbs found himself sailing blindly, unaware of the treacherous coastline nearby.

Then, like a veil being lifted, the fog dissipated, revealing a haunting sight—the formidable cliffs and roaring breakers of this very gorge. Captain Gibbs acted swiftly, commanding his crew to set sail and steer away from the imminent danger. But time was against them, and the ship, unable to escape its fate, collided with a reef, shattering its masts and rigging within moments.

In those chaotic and terrifying moments, lives were lost, and despair loomed over the doomed vessel. However, amidst the tragedy, the tale takes an extraordinary turn. Two souls emerged as beacons of hope and courage—Eva Carmichael and Thomas Pearce.

The Best GOR Tour

This is *the best* option if you want a private tour of the Great Ocean Road. Simon (accurately known by locals as "Simon the Likeable") is a personal, professional and knowledgeable tour guide. You leave the city early and go right to the 12 apostles, beating the crowds and tour busses. Then, you explore the sights along the road and have the locations to yourself working back towards Melbourne. We loved the entire day, including lunch in Apollo Bay at some local shops, a beautiful rainforest hike and the cliffs themselves. Scott has a keen eye for wildlife, spotting us a roadside wild koala and finding us a whole mob of Eastern Gray kangaroos - no need for other tourists or a zoo! Simon is a Melbourne native and worldly guide- with plenty of experience being a tour guide and expert conversationalist. We would not hesitate to take another tour with Simon (we did his fantastic wine tour the next day!) and would recommend him to anyone looking for a private, classy and well executed tour!

We are raving about our private Great Ocean Road tour

It’s been over 3 months since we did our private tour of GOR with Simon and we are still raving about it. Simon was amazing. He’s extremely knowledgeable about the area, knows all the tricks to outrun the crowds, and perfect spots for Instagram worthy pictures! He went out of his way to make the day memorable despite the rain, getting out of the car with us to take us straight to all the best views. He made sure what needed to be seen was seen! Although there’s never a guarantee, we saw kangaroos galore and koalas perched in trees thanks to his patience and perseverance. We were in Australia for 3 weeks and this was definitely one of the main highlights. Our family would do it again without hesitation. Thank you Simon!
